The Difference is Me
Funwi Numfor was my next encounter on the Las Vegas strip. Funwi is a poet going to school in the United States, though he was born and grew up in Cameroon. He was peddling his second book, The Difference is Me on the Las Vegas Strip - hoping to get know, and hoping to find followers. I bought a copy, though I haven't looked at it yet.
John David
One of the first real beggars I met while in Las Vegas was John David. He tells me that he is named after two people in the Bible and his two grandparents, John and David. His story was a sad one - his girlfriend/wife left him and took everything he had. This occurred in California, and he was trying to get back on his feet in Las Vegas. He didn't want donations, but was selling rocks with precious metals in this: gold and silver. Note: I didn't leave with any rocks, but I did leave with some photos. First, I'll show you the color version with a tilted crop:
After some discussion, I found that John David was from Lexington, KY and had lived in Russellville, KY for a while. Even so, he wasn't familiar with the far western end of the state.

Goldman
On the first day of a recent trip to Las Vegas, the first random person I decided to approach was a man painted gold. He quickly agreed, almost enthusiastically to let me photography him. As I was setting up, I introduced myself, as did he, and his name was appropriately Goldman.
Goldman is from Ivory Coast, a violent nation on the west coast of Africa. He lives here now with his wife and children, and the saying he kept repeating was, "Live life to the fullest!"

Abraham
Occasionally you just run across a person who brightens your day. Abraham is one of those people. After speaking with him, he make me want to show my smile to everyone.
Abraham was born in the Sudan. He told me he was one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. I had not heard the term, but in summary, he was part of a terribly large group of young men separated from their parents at gunpoint, never to see them again. This happened to Abraham when he was 12. He suggested I watch Lost Boys of Sudan to understand what happened.
Abraham has been in the United States about twelve years, but due to immigration law and finances, his wife and child are still in the Sudan. He is working to resolve that.
I was pleased to find out Abraham knows Jesus as his Savior. It sure didn't surprise me seeing the joy on this man's face.
Brett and Kate
I took the scenic route to Denver on the way back from Fort Collins, Colorado on my last trip. This included a stop off at a fantastic coffee shop in Estes Park, Colorado. If you know me, you know I am extremely picky about my coffee, but this place, Kind Coffee, had the best coffee I have had in a shop in a while. Most shops don't know how to make a good light roast coffee, but that was not true here at all. While I was there I had an opportunity to meet two great folks, Brett and Kate.
Brett has been with Kind Coffee about a year. He had a great laid-back personality that was welcoming.
Kate moved to Estes Park from Seattle about three years ago. She has actually been a barista for twenty years! Seriously, did she start when she was three!? She has worked for Kind Coffee for about three years.
I had a great conversation with these two, and I hope to meet them in my travels again.
